(CNN Spanish) — The president of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele, assured on Sunday that his government can solve the crisis of violence that is increasing in Haiti and that it would require “a resolution of the UN Security Council, the consent of the host country and to cover all the expenses of the mission.
The president published his idea in response to a user’s post on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday indicating that “Haiti has collapsed.”
Shortly following, Bukele reacted to another post regarding the country’s most notorious gang leader, Jimmy Cherizier, nicknamed “Barbecue,” saying “we saw similar images in El Salvador a few years ago. Gangs bathing with the skulls of their victims.”
The president of El Salvador, recognized for his war once morest gangs in his country, reiterated that, although “all the experts said that” these groups “might not be defeated, because they were an intrinsic part of our society,” it was shown that ” they were wrong” and “we annihilated them.
“The same should be done in Haiti,” he added.
The exceptional regime promoted by Bukele for just under two years has been criticized by various analysts and international observers such as Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch, who have denounced systematic violations of human rights.
After his re-election, Bukele acknowledged that the El Salvador Police may have made mistakes in applying his government’s security policy, but he defended the security measures he has implemented.
A meeting of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (Caricom) on Haiti is being held this Monday in Kingston, Jamaica, said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN secretary general, on Friday. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is scheduled to attend, as is Mexican Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena, but it is unclear whether Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry will be present.
