The weather phenomenon El Niño, which can lead to increased extreme weather, has begun, according to the US Oceanography and Weather Administration NOAA. “El Niño conditions are present and are likely to gradually strengthen into winter,” NOAA said on Thursday. An emergence of the weather phenomenon characterized by warming of surface waters in the Pacific Ocean had been expected for some time.
El Niño occurs every two to seven years and can further increase global temperatures. The weather phenomenon usually leads to severe drought in Australia, Indonesia and parts of southern Asia, while causing heavier precipitation in some regions of Africa and South America, the southern United States and central Asia. El Niño last occurred in 2018 and 2019.
NOAA expert Michelle L’Heureux explained that climate change might amplify the effects of El Niño, but also mitigate some of them. The weather phenomenon might lead to new “record temperatures” in those areas where above-average temperatures already prevailed.
