Peru entered the “Coastal El Niño Alert” due to sea warming, as announced by the Multisectoral Commission in charge of the National Study of the El Niño Phenomenon (ENFEN).
Eng. Ruth Alcca, head of the Risk and Disaster Management Office of the Provincial Municipality of Ilo (MPI), stated that the temperature of the water in the sea is increasing.
“We have gone from a surveillance alert to a general alert for the Coastal Child. This means temperature variations above normal, which is causing increased rainfall in the north and center, while a possible drought in the south,” he said.
The necessary measures must be taken to be able to control what may harm the southern zone and carry out campaigns for the north of Peru.
Alcca, indicated that according to the ENFEN statement dated March 16, the increase in sea temperature is between 0.4 and 1°C above normal, which will cause the displacement of some aquatic species such as anchovy and there will be access to horse mackerel, tuna and mackerel.
According to the report, the rest of March is expected that the rivers from Tumbes to Ica continue to maintain flows with alert levels once morest possible overflows and floods. In the southern area, the flows will be below normal and there will be a drought.
