El Niño and Climate Change: WMO Predicts Warm Current Until April

The warm El Niño is expected to last at least until next April. This situation will contribute to a further increase in land and ocean temperatures, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) said on Wednesday in Geneva.

The warm current reached moderate strength in September and will likely strengthen further from November to January. The threat that it persists throughout the winter is estimated at 90%. El Niño occurs every two years and lasts nine to twelve months. Its delayed effects are rather expected for next year. But due to record temperatures since June, this year “is well on its way to becoming the hottest ever observed,” repeats WMO Secretary General Petteri Taalas.

Due to the warm current, next year is expected to be even more problematic. The head of the WMO once more attributes this situation to climate change linked to human activities. The organization anticipates a further increase in temperatures through April. El Niño exacerbates droughts in territories like Australia, as well as parts of Asia and the American continent.

Conversely, it causes significant precipitation and flooding in several regions such as parts of the American, African and Asian continents, as well as in southern South America. It also results in warming ocean temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific.
