El Bòlit will open the year with a tribute to Pere Portabella

El Bòlit, Girona’s Center for Contemporary Art, is launching a new year with the aim of consolidating the axes set by its director, Ingrid Guardiola, who took office in May last year. With the end of the exhibitions Petromasculinities and Towards the Gods, inaugurated last autumn and which can still be visited until this Sunday, the facility will start in 2022 with cinema as the main protagonist. Carles Santos and Pere Portabella will focus on the first exhibition that can be visited at the art center between January 14 and February 22.

Coinciding with the appointment of Pere Portabella as doctor honoris causa by the University of Girona, El Bòlit will present two exhibitions. El Bòlit_PouRodó will show El pensamiento de Santos en el cinema de Pere Portabella, an exhibition curated by Ona Balló and focused on the relationship between Pere Portabella and Carles Santos through sound. On the same dates, the Bòlit_StNicolau will host Gosar, poder, an installation of two audiovisual pieces inspired by the tribute «Projecte poetes» that took place at the Biblioteca Nacional de Catalunya in 2020, coinciding with the fiftieth anniversary of the film Catalan poets (1970) by the Empordà director.

This tribute to Pere Portabella, who will turn 93 next February, will feature works by the Empordà filmmaker himself and Carles Santos, as well as Isaki Lacuesta, Carles Torras and the curator, Ona Balló. As usual, the Bòlit will also offer a series of parallel activities while the exhibition is open to the public to delve into the cinematographic themes and filmography of Portabella.

Insects and narcotics

The world of insects and their essential role in the functioning of the world will star in the show that will arrive in Bòlit in March. Created and curated by musicians Eduard Pou and Sara Fontán, residents of Calonge, Insectòdrom, which will remain open at Bòlit_StNicolau until the beginning of June, is a sound installation projected in parallel to the construction, with the collaboration of La Volta, from an insect hostel that will be located in the orchards of Santa Eugènia de Girona.

Also in March it will arrive at Bòlit_LaRambla and Bòlit_PouRodó Narcohumanisme. Pharmacies and narcotics in current artistic practices, an exhibition project curated by Núria Gómez and Eloy Fernández that reflects the double side of toxicity, “lysergy as a physical substance and as an epistemological accident” and “the overflows of the self”, according to indicates the Bòlit in its programming.

A futuristic biennial

Between June and September, the Bòlit will exhibit the 2064 Biennial. Curated by Jorge Luis Marzo, Arturo Fito Rodríguez and Roc Albalat, the exhibition proposes a critical review of an Art Biennial taking place in 2064, “with the aim of presenting a scenario in which to reflect a series of current phenomena that revolve around the role of data science, technology and its impact on contemporary artistic systems ”.

Also in the hottest months of the year, the facility will allow you to see Palau de Vent, the new work of visual artist Lúa Coderch. It is a video installation regarding disorientation “understood in a vital sense”, in relation to “the crisis of the great stories that have historically structured our life together, as a society, but also our intimate life.” In this way, the project deals with topics such as religion, progress, science, family and romantic love to investigate how they have entered a crisis.

The year of Bòlit will end with the exhibitions Savis, locus & freaks -curated by Julià Guillamon and Adrià Pujol- and will be accompanied by the transfeminist project Archivo Dis.funcional by Sofía Giménez and The potential history of Francesc Tosquelles, Catalonia and fear by Mireia Sallarès, in addition to Bòlit Mentor.
