Alt-rock meets dream-pop. The Canadian singer EKKSTACY released on September 15th. 2023 with “Problems”, the first single following the album “Misery”.
Last year, Canadian singer EKKSTACY released the soundtrack to the doomscroll era with his post-punk album “Misery.” He was also nominated for the “ANCHOR” Reeperbahn Festival International Music Award. Today, the Vancouver alt-rock star (nearly 4 million monthly listeners) returns with the single “Problems.”
The initially unexpected pairing with rapper Trippie Redd on “Problems” makes sense, as he already fused progressive punk with emo bangers on the collaboration album “Neon Shark vs. Pegasus” (with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker). “Problems”, on the other hand, is a comeback track for which EKKSTACY foregoes louder moments.
Instead, he directs his sound into introspective, inner spaces. Glazed dream pop and strumming surf guitars place both artists in a new context. The lyrics of the two come together to form a striking hook that underlines EKKSTACY’s growing maturity.
„It was fun producing the song. It was taken between 3 and 6 a.m. in Miami, just before I had to go to the airport„, erinnert sich EKKSTACY. „Trippie and I wrote and recorded the lyrics, the music comes from my German producer Mangetsu. We both grew up listening to Trippie’s music, so we’re glad we have a song with him now.“
The music video finds its melancholy in stereotypical scenes of hip-hop bacchanalia. A Lamborghini drives up, EKKSTACY and Trippie Redd perform flanked by dancers in a mansion, but appear desensitized and lost in the scenes. It is a funny and at the same time thoughtful picture in a world characterized by wealth, excess and fame.

About the video, director Gilbert Trejo says: “Stacy and I wanted to play with the idea of success and happiness, and that one doesn’t always come with the other. What we want and what we get, what is expected of us and who we are. Once we knew what we wanted, it was so much fun to develop the sunny, happy and playful images for a song that would fit on a playlist with ‘Between the Bars’ or ‘No Name #1’.“
The single ‘Problems’ follows a European tour over the summer, which included appearances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals, where EKKSTACY touched audiences with its mix of post-punk, dream-pop and indie. The team-up on “Problems” expands EKKSTACY’s horizons and lays the foundation for the future up to the third album.
