On his third album, the kid from Vancouver heals his wounds by breathing fresh air into rock.
Great sensitivity and talent, this is how we might succinctly present Ekkstacy to those who do not yet know him despite two albums on the clock and a real budding success (a few million listens on the platforms and the cover of the magazine NME last December).
Originally from Vancouver, the young man was spotted by the leader of the group The Drums, Jonathan Pierce, in 2020. Ekkstacy still follows in the footsteps of his mentor and delivers a handful of incandescent tracks placed under the sign of surf rock.
A mix of indie, postpunk, shoegaze and surf rock
Here, we don’t laze on sunny Californian beaches but on the tarmac of a deserted 7-Eleven parking lot or that of a frozen backyard in the suburbs of Vancouver, all the while dreaming of love and escape. The texts seem to have been written in an uninterrupted stream, in a language that is sensitive and angry at the same time. Close, obvious, and more than ever marked by hope on this new album.
So, certainly, it’s not a revolution in rock either (can we still be?), and if the Canadian is still eyeing 2010, it’s much more than a simple copy of the sound of The Drums and its signature reverb.
A youthful and festive desire to get laid in order to push away anxieties
Ekkstacy cultivates its own musical universe by mixing indie, postpunk, shoegaze and surf rock. He breathes real freshness into this handful of titles. On this third album, Ekkstacy willingly tampers with his voice by adding various effects and invites rappers The Kid Laroi and Trippie Redd to the party. Fans of Girls, Peach Pit, The Vagina Lips, My Bloody Valentine or The Drums (obviously) will catch the (cold) wave immediately.
Others should soon feel its irresistible call. Take Ecstasy with Mesang the unforgettable The Magnetic Fields on the last track of their fourth album, Holiday. Except for a few letters, the ecstasy is the same. Fragility too. This youthful and festive desire to get laid – pushed by the sound barrier – in order to push away anxieties and wounds is a bittersweet pleasure that we never tire of.
Ekkstacy (UnitedMasters). Released January 19.
