Eintracht Frankfurt’s Offensive Woes: Analyzing the Impact of Rafael Borré’s Departure and the Search for a New Striker

After five Bundesliga matchdays, Eintracht Frankfurt is still unbeaten and also has the best defense of all 18 teams. At the same time, no team has scored less often than the Hessians, who sold their top scorer Randal Kolo Muani to Paris on Deadline Day for a record fee. Since the internal candidates for the offensive have hardly appeared so far, some fans are now mourning the loss of Rafael Borré, who is flourishing in Bremen. Rightly so?

People in Frankfurt would like to quickly forget the last day of the summer transfer period. Two last-minute departures in attack significantly reduced new coach Dino Toppmöller’s options, especially since no replacement could be found quickly for 95 million euro departure Randal Kolo Muani.

The fact that the SGE had announced the loan of European Cup hero Rafael Borré to league rivals Werder Bremen a few hours earlier seemed even more strange in retrospect.

The day after the departure, Eintracht sports director Markus Krösche admitted that in retrospect it would have been better not to make the deal.

Krösche made it clear that it was “bitter” that the preparations for successor candidates could not be implemented because of PSG’s late offer for Kolo Muani.

“Also – and you have to be honest – we wouldn’t have agreed to the loan of Rafael Borré three hours later,” the 43-year-old remarked meaningfully and added: “In the short term, we have to admit that the situation is due to the lack of compensation Storm is not ideal.”

In the long term, however, the decision to hand over Kolo Muani was “responsible and right,” emphasized Krösche.

Borré thrives after moving from Frankfurt to Bremen

But: While the Frankfurt newcomers Omar Marmoush and Jessic Ngankam are still struggling with starting problems here and now, Rafael Borré impressed straight away in his first appearance in the Bremen starting line-up. His important equalizer marked the turnaround in the 2-1 win against 1. FC Köln.

The truth is, of course, that Borré is not a classic striker and that is why he hardly made any appearances for Eintracht before his move. In the first competitive games, Coach Toppmöller completely refrained from naming the Colombian to the squad.

Nevertheless, the separation has a bad aftertaste, after all, Borré was particularly impressive in his first season in the Main metropolis. Thanks to his decisive penalty in the Europa League final against Rangers, he still enjoys cult status among fans today.

Because Werder was not granted a purchase option, Borré, who still has a working document in Frankfurt that is valid until 2025, could theoretically play for Eintracht again from the summer. However, in the current storm misery, that doesn’t help those responsible.

Will Eintracht Frankfurt improve in the winter?

After Borré’s debut goal for Werder, Eintracht Frankfurt was accused on social networks of having made the transfer fail of the summer with the loan.

Recently, even Lucas Alario, who had previously been completely forgotten, is once again seen as a bearer of hope. The Argentine is currently fighting his way back into training after a long injury.

Nevertheless, a new nine for the winter is at the top of the SGE’s shopping list. After the Kolo Muani transfer, the coffers are full, which can of course drive up the prices.

In order to be able to continue to dance successfully at three weddings, we need more power on the front line as soon as possible. Whether a Borré would have been the solution to all problems remains questionable.
