Eight percent more passengers at Vienna Airport

Flughafen Wien AG is looking back on growth in the first half of the year. The group handled 10.1 percent more passengers than in the same period last year, and at Vienna Airport itself, passenger volume rose by 7.9 percent. This means that the number of passengers at the Schwechat site was roughly at the pre-coronavirus level from 2019, the airport announced in a press release on Thursday. The number of guests also increased at the airports in Malta and Kosice (Slovakia).

The company registered around 14.39 million passengers in Vienna-Schwechat, which corresponds to 98.1 percent of the pre-crisis level. In June alone, the airport had more than three million passengers (plus 6.5 percent) and, according to its own information, achieved the busiest travel day in history with more than 113,000 passengers on June 28. Cargo volume increased by 21.1 percent to 24,808 tons compared to June 2023.

In June, flights from Vienna mainly went to Western Europe, with more than a million travelers, an increase of 7.1 percent compared to the previous year. 265,382 passengers traveled to Eastern Europe (plus 6.2 percent). 43,765 travelers flew to North America (minus 4.7 percent) and 27,799 to Africa (plus 20.5 percent). 6.8 percent fewer people traveled to the Near and Middle East compared to the previous year.

The increase in passengers in the first half of the year was even greater at the airports in Malta (plus 18.4 percent) and Kosice (plus 9.4 percent) than in Vienna. From the company’s perspective, business in June was also encouraging, with more travelers in Malta and Kosice.
