Typhoon Gaemi, which is on track for Taiwan After passing close to the Philippines, it has caused the death of at least eight people and has impacted more than 800,000 inhabitants of the Philippine archipelago, according to official sources reported on Tuesday.
The Philippines’ National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said in its latest report that most of the deaths occurred in the southern region of Mindanao.
Typhoon Gaemi has caused flooding
Gaemi became a typhoon on Monday after being classified as a tropical storm, with winds of 150 kilometers per hour and gusts reaching 185 kilometers per hour, according to the Philippine news agency PAGASA. This has caused heavy rains and flooding that have impacted numerous roads and bridges in different regions of the country.
As it progressed and gained intensity, Gaemi moved northwestward without making full landfall in the Philippines. It is currently heading toward Taiwan, which has issued both maritime and land alerts.
Around twenty typhoons hit the Philippines every year, especially between June and December, making the country one of the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change worldwide.
