Eight lawsuits against X in Europe over personal data and artificial intelligence

X “never actively informed its users that their personal data was being used to train its Grok AI technology,” writes the Viennese NGO, black sheep of the tech giants, which had already in June Meta to retreat to the same issue.

“It seems that most people have discovered the new default setting” thanks to a message from a user on July 26, underlines the organization, which is asking the various national regulatory authorities to proceed with an “urgent procedure”.

The non-governmental organization filed appeals in Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands to compel the social network to respect the rights of its more than 60 million users in Europe.

Noyb takes note of the announcement of the suspension by Elon Musk’s network of the use of personal data following an agreement reached with the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), acting on behalf of the European Union.

But it calls for a “full investigation” to “ensure that Twitter (the former name of the X network) fully respects” the General Data Protection Regulation (RGPD), which requires user consent.

“It seems that the DPC did not question the very legitimacy of the process (…) and does not attack the heart of the problem,” writes Noyb director Max Schrems in the announcement.

The association, whose acronym refers to the expression “None of your business”, has proceeded with numerous appeals against the internet giants.

In the case of Meta alone, its actions have led to “administrative fines of more than 1.5 billion euros”, he recalls.

The giant American social media company (Facebook, Instagram), which has been the target of Noyb appeals in 11 European countries, was forced to suspend its program in June for using personal data of its users in an artificial intelligence program.
