191 road fatalities between January 1 and July 9, 2023
Vienna (OTS) – Last week, two motorcycle drivers, two car drivers, one e-bike driver, one light motorcycle driver, a passenger on a motorcycle and a passenger in a car died in traffic accidents. A serious traffic accident occurred on Monday, July 5, 2023 in Vienna-Döbling, in which a 17-year-old car occupant was killed. A 15-year-old car driver who was driving without a valid driving license tried to evade a police check. He fled at excessive speed and wanted to avoid a patrol car and drive past it. As a result of this maneuver, the 15-year-old lost control of the vehicle and hit the rear of a mast and then a parked car. The violent impact killed the 17-year-old passenger and critically injured another passenger. The 15-year-old driver was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. At the weekend – at the beginning of the summer holidays in Carinthia, Upper Austria, Salzburg, Styria, Tyrol and Vorarlberg – five road users died in accidents.
In the previous week, four people died on a state road B, two on a municipal road and one each on a state road L and on the motorway. Two traffic deaths each had to be mourned in Lower Austria and Styria and one each in Upper Austria, Salzburg, Tyrol and Vienna.
The probable main causes of the accident were inappropriate speed in three cases and alcohol consumption, overtaking, fatigue and violation of priority in one case each. In one fatal accident, the cause might not be clarified so far. Four fatal road accidents were single-vehicle accidents and one road fatality was a foreign national.
From January 1st to July 9th, 2023 there were 191 fatalities on the Austrian road network (provisional figure). In the comparative period of 2022 there were 201 and in 2021 163.
