Paris police on Sunday ordered the evacuation of the Eiffel Tower due to the presence of an unauthorized climber who began climbing the iconic structure this afternoon just hours before the closing ceremony of the Olympic Games taking place in the French capital.
Police began escorting visitors out at around 3.30pm but a group was trapped on the second floor for half an hour before they were able to leave.
Although the Eiffel Tower played a leading role in the opening ceremony, the closing ceremony will take place at the Saint-Denis stadium, in the north of the city, from 9 p.m. The incident resulted in the climber being arrested, police sources told French broadcaster BFMTV.
