Egyptian Suez Canal Collision: BW Lesmis and Buri Tankers Incident

The Marine Traffic company, which follows the movement of ships, said, quoting witnesses, on Wednesday, that the liquefied natural gas tanker BW Lesmis and the oil products tanker Buri collided briefly in the Egyptian Suez Canal.

The shipping tracking company showed the Singapore-flagged tanker BW Lesmiss stopped with its nose pointed north, and the Cayman Islands-flagged tanker Borei anchored and pointed south regarding 19 km (12 miles) from the southern end of the channel.

Shipping sources told Archyde.com that the BW Lesmes tanker would be towed away to the Suez anchorage area.

A fast video composite of successive images revealed by Marine Traffic showed the turn of the tanker Borei and the collision of its side with the tanker BW Lesmes, which was already parked in the width of the channel at 2040 GMT, before the Borei turned back and straightened.

No confirmation has been issued so far from the Suez Canal Authority.

On the eighth of August, an Egyptian locomotive collided with a tanker flying the Hong Kong flag, causing the locomotive to sink.

The Egyptian authorities recovered the sunken tanker “Fahd” two days following the accident.

The accident led to the death of one of the crew members of the locomotive, and his body was found and extracted from the water.

From time to time, ships get stuck or run aground while crossing the Suez Canal, which connects the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, and is a vital passage through which regarding 10 percent of international maritime trade passes.

In March 2021, the giant container carrier Ever Given ran aground, weighing regarding 200,000 tons in the canal, when its nose got stuck during a sandstorm at a point on the eastern bank of the Suez, causing navigation to stop for 6 days.

Canal revenues are a major source of foreign exchange in Egypt.
