Executive Director of the Egyptian Red Crescent Society, Rami Al-Nazer, said that large amounts of relief, food and medical aid were sent from Egypt to Morocco and Libya, following the devastating earthquake that struck the Kingdom and the massive floods that the city of Derna witnessed.
Speaking to Sky News Arabia, Al-Nazer added: “More than 100 tons of relief materials were prepared for Morocco, and another 90 tons were sent to Libya.”
He explained: “In the beginning, coordination took place with the Red Crescent Societies in the two countries under the umbrella of the Ministry of Social Solidarity in Egypt, and with the Egyptian Armed Forces and state agencies. We worked to prepare tents, blankets, hygiene tools, dry food, medicines, and others.”
The Executive Director of the Egyptian Red Crescent continued:
The operations room we established works 24 hours a day, and we communicate with the Libyan and Moroccan Red Crescents to update numbers and monitor needs. A number of Egyptian Red Crescent teams and search and rescue workers have been prepared to assist in Libya. A large team of volunteers works around the clock to prepare, pack and package food and non-food aid, with the aim of delivering it to the other party in a proper and appropriate manner. There are 10 relief teams, each made up of 5 volunteers, scheduled to enter Libya in the coming hours, to participate in search and rescue operations, following obtaining the necessary approvals. Rescue and relief teams are optimally trained to deal with floods and rain, and are among the best teams in the Middle East. Members of the Egyptian Red Crescent travel to afflicted countries in more than one stage, in each of which specialized teams and different assistance are sent.
“Our hearts with you”
The Egyptian Red Crescent launched two support campaigns for Morocco and Libya to support families affected by the effects of the earthquake and devastating floods, which led to huge human and material losses, by calling a hotline or through the Authority’s website.
The Executive Director of the Authority stressed that “our response to any crisis or disaster does not stop. Egypt has a major role. In Sudan, for example, medical, food and logistical assistance was provided to hundreds of thousands, in addition to personal hygiene bags and other supplies, while facilitating the passage of the elderly and people of determination to reach them.” to their final destinations.
Al-Nazer sent a message of thanks to the volunteers who responded to the call, saying: “You performed a heroic and distinguished work in a short time, and you were able to prepare and pack the required materials in an optimal manner, and you responded to the call of the search and rescue teams to be present on Libyan and Moroccan lands with great openness and love.”
He continued: “We are very in solidarity with our people in Morocco and Libya. You are friends, brothers and neighbors, and we, as the Egyptian Red Crescent Society, are with you heart and soul.”
