Egyptian government source reveals the amount of the country’s strategic wheat stock

The source stressed that this ministry remains keen to provide and secure a stock of all basic commodities sufficient for the country’s needs for long periods.

For his part, Abdel Ghaffar Al-Salamouni, Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Grain Industry at the Federation of Egyptian Industries, confirmed that the rate of local wheat supply from farmers has increased and reached about 3.6 million tons of wheat.

He stressed that the current season promises positive results, especially after the increase in the price of wheat supply, which contributed to encouraging farmers to deliver it. The season continues until August 15.

According to him, the state subsidizes bread with more than 125 billion pounds ($2.5 billion) annually, and nearly 71 million citizens benefit from the bread subsidy system.

He added that the country has witnessed a huge boom over the past 10 years through the unprecedented expansion in establishing national projects, including the national silos project. The storage capacity of wheat inside silos has been increased to nearly 5 million tons after it did not exceed 1.2 tons before 2014, in addition to the presence of silos in the private sector with a storage capacity of more than one million tons.

Al-Salmouni said that working to connect the railway to medium and large capacity silos and maximizing the transport of wheat and strategic goods by railway and river transport contributes to reducing the cost of transportation, noting that the percentage of wheat loss in the past ranged from 10 to 15%, due to poor storage in open places.
