Egyptian Foreign Minister: The dangerous Israeli escalation knows no bounds and is dragging the region to the brink of abyss

In a speech before the general debate of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly yesterday, Saturday, Abdel Ati said, “The brutal Israeli aggression that has continued on the Gaza Strip for nearly a year and the continuation of the current aggression on the West Bank represents a real disgrace on the face of the international community and its institutions that are unable to exercise the minimum.” We must exert effort and pressure to stop this aggression.”

Abdel Aty added that Egypt strongly condemns “the dangerous Israeli escalation that knows no borders and is dragging the region to the brink of abyss.”

He stressed that the highest priority at the present time is to stop the bloodbath immediately, permanently and unconditionally, and to stand with the utmost decisiveness against any attempt to liquidate the Palestinian cause through displacement or population replacement policies, in addition to the extreme importance of full and unconditional access to humanitarian and medical aid to the defenseless civilian population of the Gaza Strip.

He recalled that Egypt made intensive efforts to mediate with Qatar and the United States, “but Israel was keen to obstruct these efforts over the course of several months.”

In addition, the Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed that his country will continue to bear its responsibilities in the humanitarian response to the challenges of the crises that are plaguing its regional surroundings, which have made Egypt the third country in the world to receive asylum requests during the year 2023.

He pointed out that there are limits that cannot be crossed to the burdens that Egypt can bear, so the international community has a clear responsibility to provide full support to fill the financing gaps and mobilize the necessary resources to meet the needs of humanitarian operations and the requirements of refugees from countries suffering from conflict.

The Egyptian Minister identified a set of basic principles to restore confidence and credibility and confront double standards, the first of which is “to recognize that there is no alternative to the international multilateral system.”

He also stressed that the condition for equality is real, not formal, participation in international decision-making. Participation is not a grant or favor from some countries towards others.

He added that it cannot be accepted that Africa and the Arab countries will remain without permanent representation with all powers in the Security Council.

He also said that the way to transform differences in resources between countries into comparative advantages to achieve integration, construction and cooperation instead of fueling disparities and deepening the gap between societies, is through strengthening the principle of shared responsibility with varying burdens.
