Egypt has welcomed more than 16,000 foreigners fleeing the deadly conflict currently affecting neighboring Sudan, including more than 14,000 Sudanese, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
According to Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesman for the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, quoted in the statement, non-Sudanese foreigners come from 50 countries and 6 international organizations.
“Egypt’s efforts continue around the clock to facilitate the reception of civilians fleeing military clashes in Sudan, work to alleviate their suffering and provide them with the necessary humanitarian aid,” Abu Zeid said.
Meanwhile, official Egyptian data shows that Egypt has managed to evacuate 2,679 of its nationals from Sudan as of Wednesday.
Since mid-April, Sudan has been embroiled in clashes between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces following days of tension between the once-allied leaders of the two sides.
The World Health Organization has said that at least 459 people have been killed and more than 4,000 others injured so far in the conflict in Sudan.
