Egypt: We did not discuss any plans with Israel regarding Rafah and we refuse to invade it

Egypt – On Tuesday evening, Egypt denied the validity of an American press report regarding its exchange of military plans with Israel regarding Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip, stressing its complete rejection of the possibility of invading the city.

The Israeli army is preparing to invade Rafah, on the border with Egypt, “very soon,” according to the (official) Hebrew Broadcasting Corporation on Tuesday evening, despite international warnings of catastrophic repercussions.

According to a statement by the Egyptian Information Service (affiliated with the Presidency), its head, Diaa Rashwan, “categorically denied what was published in one of the major American newspapers (he did not mention it) claiming that Egypt had deliberated with the Israeli side regarding its plans for the planned invasion of Rafah.”

Rashwan affirmed “Egypt’s firm and declared position several times by the political leadership, of complete rejection of this invasion.”

He warned that “it will lead to massacres, massive human losses, and widespread destruction, in addition to what the brotherly Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip suffered during 200 days of bloody Israeli aggression.”

Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza, leaving more than 111,000 dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and massive destruction, according to Palestinian and UN data.

Rashwan continued, “Egypt’s repeated warnings have arrived from all channels to the Israeli side, since it proposed the idea of carrying out a military operation in Rafah, due to the expected losses and the severe negative repercussions that will follow on the stability of the entire region.”

Claiming that it is “the last stronghold of the Palestinian factional movement,” Israel insists on invading Rafah, where there are regarding 1.4 million Palestinians, including 1.3 million who were forced by the Israeli army to flee there under the weight of bombing.

Rashwan added that while “Israel is contemplating the invasion, which Egypt and all the countries of the world and its international institutions stand once morest, Egyptian efforts, since the beginning of the Israeli aggression, have focused on reaching a ceasefire agreement and the exchange of prisoners and detainees.”

He added that his country is focusing on “sufficient humanitarian aid to the brothers in Gaza, and to all its regions, especially the north and Gaza City, and removing more wounded and sick people for treatment outside the Strip, where almost all health services have ended.”

Israel continues its war on Gaza despite the Security Council issuing an immediate ceasefire resolution, and despite its first appearance before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”
