Egypt.. The National Wages Council raises the minimum salaries for workers in the private sector

Egypt – The National Wages Council in Egypt announced that it will raise the minimum salaries for workers in the private sector to 6,000 pounds, starting in May 2024.

The decision excludes micro-enterprises in which the number of workers is less than 10 people, while opening the door to grievances and complaints for a period of 3 months to the Grievances Committee headed by the Minister of Labor.

Minister of Planning and Economic Development Hala Al-Saeed confirmed during the council meeting on Sunday that raising the minimum wage comes within the framework of ensuring the interests of workers, especially with the recent developments and economic changes internally and externally.

Al-Saeed pointed out the government’s keenness to achieve a balance in the interests of both sides of production, the employer and the worker, especially in light of the current challenges, in addition to its endeavor to preserve workers’ rights and gains, provide them with a decent life, stabilize establishments, and achieve the highest productivity to serve the development process in the country.

The Minister reviewed the development of the minimum wage for workers in the private sector, which reached 2,400 pounds for the first time in January 2022, and was raised to 2,700 pounds in January 2023, then raised once more in July 2023 to reach 3,000 pounds, then to 3,500 pounds last January, then Up to 6,000 thousand pounds, including all components of the wage, including the employer’s share in the insurance subscription.

For his part, Minister of Labor Hassan Shehata said that this decision comes in line with the directives of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi to provide more care, protection and support for workers, “soldiers of production,” and to strengthen labor relations between both parties of the production process, business owners and workers. It also confirms the keenness to improve The worker’s living life, and creating a suitable work environment for him, which is reflected in increased production, from which the employer also benefits.

Shehata explained that as soon as the National Wages Council’s decision is issued, the Ministry will send a periodic letter to its labor directorates in all governorates of Egypt, regarding the details of the executive rules and how to follow up on the implementation of the decision.
