Egypt, Saudi Arabia discuss regional escalation following Israeli assassinations

Egypt – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati discussed with his Saudi counterpart Faisal bin Farhan, on Friday, the “dangerous” regional escalation that the region has witnessed in recent days “as a result of extremist Israeli policies and the approach of assassinations.”

This came during a phone call between the Egyptian Foreign Minister and his Saudi counterpart, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.

During the call, the two ministers discussed “ways to advance cooperation between Egypt and Saudi Arabia at various levels.”

They also discussed “the dangerous regional escalation in recent days as a result of extremist Israeli policies and the assassination approach it adopts,” in reference to the assassination of the head of the political bureau of the Palestinian factions movement, Ismail Haniyeh, on Wednesday, in the Iranian capital, Tehran.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister stressed “the importance of stopping the ongoing escalation, and the necessity for major international powers, led by the United States, to play their role and responsibility in stopping the pace of escalation.”

For his part, Bin Farhan expressed his “aspiration to continue the path of strengthening bilateral relations and continuing joint cooperation to enhance the pace of coordination and consultation in connection with regional issues and challenges, in a way that achieves the interests of the two peoples, and works to ensure the security and stability of the region,” according to the Egyptian statement.

On Thursday, the Israeli army claimed that it had “intelligence confirmed” that it had assassinated the movement’s military wing leader, Mohammed Deif, in an air strike carried out on July 13 on the Al-Mawasi area in Khan Yunis, south of the Gaza Strip, despite a previous denial by the movement.

The Israeli announcement of the death of Al-Daif came after the Palestinian factions and Iran announced, on Wednesday, the assassination of Haniyeh, in an Israeli airstrike that targeted his residence in Tehran, the day after his participation in the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

While Israel has remained silent on the assassination of Haniyeh, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has hinted at Tel Aviv’s responsibility for carrying out the attack.

The Israeli army was directly announced responsible for the assassination of Fouad Shukr, the top military commander of the Lebanese factions movement, in a raid on Tuesday on the southern suburbs of Beirut, amid escalating confrontations between the two sides since October 8 against the backdrop of the Gaza war.

The Israeli escalation comes amid a war waged by Tel Aviv with American support on the Gaza Strip since October 7, which has left more than 130,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing.

Tel Aviv continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution to stop it immediately, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent acts of genocide and to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Sudan war

The call between the two ministers also touched on “the serious and persistent efforts made by Cairo and Riyadh to resolve the Sudanese crisis and stop the ongoing conflict there with the aim of preserving Sudan’s unity and sovereignty, through joint work to cease fire and provide humanitarian aid,” according to the Egyptian statement.

Since mid-April 2023, the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been waging a war that has left about 18,800 dead and about 10 million displaced and refugees, according to the United Nations.

On May 6, 2023, the United States and Saudi Arabia began mediation in the city of Jeddah between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, which resulted on the 11th of the same month in the first agreement to protect civilians, deliver humanitarian aid, and refrain from seizure.
