Egypt – Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Aati stressed on Sunday that “every effort must be made to prevent escalation in the region and a slide into a regional war that threatens dire consequences,” following the escalation of confrontations between the Lebanese factions movement and Israel.
This came according to what the Egyptian Foreign Minister told his Japanese counterpart, Yoko Kamikawa, during his current visit to Tokyo, according to a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
On Sunday morning, Israeli warplanes launched more than 40 raids targeting areas in southern Lebanon, in what is considered the largest attack since the start of the confrontations on October 8, 2023, while the Lebanese factions announced the beginning of the response to the assassination of their leader, Fouad Shukr, in late July.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry reported in the same statement that Abdel-Ati met Kamikawa, “at her request, on the sidelines of the Egyptian minister’s presence in Japan to participate in the activities of the TICAD (Tokyo International Conference on African Development) ministerial meeting, a few days ago, against the backdrop of the recent escalation witnessed on the Lebanese front in the last few hours.”
The two ministers agreed on “the inevitability of preventing escalation in the region and intensifying the efforts of the two countries, in cooperation with international and regional partners, to prevent the region from sliding into a regional war that threatens the security of the region and the stability of its peoples.”
The two sides stressed the “importance of continuing efforts to reach an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, release hostages and detainees, and allow unconditional access to humanitarian and medical aid for the residents of the Strip, to put an end to the catastrophic humanitarian suffering that the Palestinian people have been experiencing over the past months.”
The Egyptian minister stressed that “every effort must be made to prevent escalation in the region and a slide into a regional war that threatens dire consequences.”
