Egypt expresses concern over Israeli attack on Yemen, calls for restraint

Egypt – Egypt expressed its “deep concern” over the Israeli military operation on Yemeni territory on Saturday evening, calling for “restraint, calm and an end to the war in the Gaza Strip.”

This came in a statement by the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, following Israeli army raids against oil tanks in the port of Hodeidah Governorate and a power station in the same governorate in western Yemen, two days after a Houthi drone targeted Tel Aviv.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said, “Egypt is following with great concern the Israeli military operation on Yemeni territory.”

She stressed that these attacks “increase the current tension on all fronts.”

Egypt stressed the “importance of concerted international efforts to preserve the security and stability of the region,” according to the statement.

In the same statement, Cairo warned “of the dangers of expanding the scope of the conflict in the region following the developments of the Gaza Strip crisis and pushing the entire region into a vicious circle of conflicts and instability.”

Egypt called on “all parties to exercise self-restraint and calm down, and avoid slipping into regional chaos.”

She called on “all actors at the regional and international levels to assume their responsibilities in order to end the Israeli war in Gaza, as it is the main reason for the current rise in tension and regional escalation.”

Egypt stressed its “firm position calling for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and allowing humanitarian aid to enter the Strip without any obstacles,” according to the statement.

She explained that “the ceasefire in Gaza is the main and necessary step to contain the tension, and the basic pillar for establishing a comprehensive calm in the region, and preserving regional security and stability.”

Earlier on Saturday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu considered, in a press conference, targeting the Hodeidah Governorate a “direct response” to the Houthi drone attack on Tel Aviv a few days ago, considering it a “message to the enemies” of Israel.

Before that, the Houthi-affiliated Al-Masirah satellite channel announced the deaths and injuries (the number was not specified) as a result of Israeli raids on oil tanks in the port of Al-Hodeidah Governorate and a power station in the same governorate.

The attack is the first direct Israeli response to Houthi attacks in recent times, and comes after a Houthi drone attack on the city of Tel Aviv early Friday morning, killing an Israeli and wounding 10 others.

For its part, the Houthi group stressed that the Israeli attack on Hodeidah “will only increase its determination and steadfastness” in supporting the Gaza Strip.

It threatened to carry out operations that would “disturb” Tel Aviv in response to the attack, according to posts on the “X” platform by the group’s spokesman, Mohammed Abdul Salam, and a member of its Supreme Political Council, Mohammed Ali al-Houthi.

In “solidarity with Gaza” in the face of the Israeli war that has been ongoing since October 7, 2023, the Houthi group has begun targeting Israeli or Israeli-linked cargo ships in the Red Sea with missiles and drones since November.

In response to these attacks, Washington and London began, since the beginning of this year, launching air strikes and missile attacks on “Houthi sites” in Yemen, which the group responded to by announcing that it now considers all American and British ships among its military targets, and expanding its attacks to ships passing through the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean or any place that its weapons can reach.
