The Ramadan 2024 drama season in Egypt is witnessing a decline in the number of comedy series, as the initial map includes only 6 works, compared to 9 series last year.
A number of comedy stars will be absent from the competition this year, most notably Mohamed Henedy, who was supposed to participate in the second part of the series “Land of Hypocrisy” before it was postponed, as well as Donia Samir Ghanem, Ahmed Fahmy, and Ali Rabie.
The list of comedy series next Ramadan includes “The Greatest 8” starring Ahmed Mekky, “Strawberry” by Nelly Karim, “Baba Jah” by Akram Hosni, “He, She and They” by Hisham Majed, and “Khaled Nour and his son Nour Khaled” starring Chico, and finally “Lunch Box” by Ghada Adel.
“The big one”
The artist Ahmed Mekky continues to present the series “The Big One”, and he will appear to his fans in Ramadan 2024, with the eighth part, which began filming weeks ago, and is supposed to include a number of guests of honor, most notably Amina Khalil and Mohamed Tharwat.
The series stars Bayoumi Fouad, Hisham Ismail, Rahma Ahmed, Hatem Salah, and Mustafa Gharib, and the screenplay and dialogue are by Ahmed Saad Wali, and directed by Ahmed El Gendy.
Nelly Karim and Akram Hosni
Actress Nelly Karim returns to presenting comedies through a series called “Strawberry,” consisting of only 15 episodes, written by Mohamed Suleiman Abdel Malek, directed by Marawan Abdel Moneim, and co-starring with Mustafa Khater, Shaima Saif and Ahmed Fahim. During the events, Nelly embodies the character of a girl named “Strawberry,” the daughter of a real estate guard, and she dreams of getting rich, so she decides to sell the illusion to people through several professions that she works in, including a cup reader, an energy expert, and an influencer.
In turn, artist Nelly Karim told Al-Sharq that she will return to comedy this Ramadan, following an absence from this genre that lasted nearly 4 years, since the series “100 Wesh,” which was shown in 2020.
She pointed out that presenting her new series “Strawberry” in only 15 episodes is due to her desire to start filming the work, and all its episodes are already written, and this is not often available in series consisting of 30 episodes, and “short works have begun to attract the audience and achieve success.” Great because of the intense events it contains, far from being long and drawn out.”
Akram Hosni also returns to the Ramadan drama marathon, following an absence of only one year, as he prepares to film a new series tentatively titled “Baba Jah,” consisting of only 15 episodes.
The series stars Nisreen Amin and Samaa Ibrahim, and the work is written by Wael Hamdy and directed by Khaled Marei.
Nisreen Amin revealed to Al-Sharq the nature of the character that she will embody in the work, explaining that she plays the role of Akram Hosni’s wife, and works in a school.
Artistic separation
The Ramadan 2024 drama season witnesses an artistic separation between Hisham Maged and Chico, as each of them presents a series on its own.
Chico is collaborating with the artist Karim Mahmoud Abdel Aziz in a comedy series called “Khaled Nour and his son Nour Khaled,” which recently started filming, and they co-star with Sherif Ramzy.
The series deals with marital disputes in a comedic context, over the course of 15 episodes. The work is written by Karim Sami and Ahmed Abdel Wahab, and directed by Mohamed Amin, in his first experience with television drama.
As for Hisham Maged, he recently contracted to star in a new series called “He, She, and They,” consisting of 15 episodes, which is the series that the artist Mustafa Shaaban contracted for two years ago, before he apologized for it.
Asmaa Jalal contracted to participate in the starring role of the series, and the work is written by Khaled and Sherine Diab, and directed by Khaled Diab.
Asmaa Jalal told Al-Sharq that she was not thinking regarding presenting a comedy series, but she was excited regarding the experience, because of the subject matter that the work addresses, and its reliance on situational comedy, in addition to her desire to cooperate with Hisham Majed and director Khaled Diab.
“Lunch box”
After her absence from the last Ramadan drama season, actress Ghada Adel will return with a new series in Ramadan 2024, called “Lunch Box,” consisting of 30 episodes.
The series’ events are inspired by the American series Good Girls, which premiered in 2018 in 4 seasons, and its events revolve around 3 mothers, who organize a robbery at a grocery store, in order to escape financial hardships and achieve their independence.
Jamila Awad, Fadwa Abed, Hisham Ismail, Amr Ramzy, and Ahmed Al-Shami are participating in the series, alongside Ghada Adel, and the work is directed by Hisham Al-Rashidi.
Writing crisis
Critic Magda Morris told Al-Sharq that: The decline in the number of comedy series in Ramadan 2024 comes due to the crises that the writing is suffering from, justifying this by the absence of series consisting of 30 episodes, with the exception of two series, which are “Al-Kabir Awi 8” starring Ahmed Mekky. And “Lunch Box” by Ghada Adel.
She saw that the series “Al-Kabir Awi” was suffering from major crises, because Ahmed Makki had placed himself in an artistic mold that he did not want to leave for many years, saying: “He may not have self-confidence, or he may be crazy regarding the characters he presents within the work.”
She continued, “Ahmed Mekky has a large fan following, and if he decides to change, he must find a good story,” so she expressed her refusal to continue the “Very Big” series if new and attractive events are not added.
