Efraimoglou’s article in ET: Conditions for an extroverted economy

In Greece – despite the fact that we face chronic deficiencies and problems – in recent years we have made significant progress in terms of infrastructure. We have accelerated the construction of a number of flagship public works. The road axes are being completed and Greece finally has a basic network of modern highways, with projects that the citizens and businesses of the Region have been waiting for years – such as the road connection Aktio – Amvrakia, the sections of the E-65 up to Kalambaka , the new sections of the Patras – Pyrgos axis. The concession of regional airports mobilizes new investment and stimulates tourism and development, especially on the islands.

In Attica in particular, a series of projects create new growth prospects for local businesses, such as the construction of the new METRO line and extensions, the extension of the Attica Road and the Suburban, the upgrading of the ports of Rafina and Lavrio, the connection of the Western Regional Egaleo with the National Highway of Athens – Corinth.

As far as freight transport is concerned, despite the progress, there are still challenges that need to be addressed. It is necessary to use all available financial tools to encourage the gradual renewal of the country’s transport fleet, to support investments for the use of new technologies and modern systems, to encourage the implementation of collaborative distribution models to achieve economies of scale and reduce transport cost.

A constant demand of the business world is also the creation of a modern network of combined transport, with the upgrading of ports, with the improvement of interconnection between regional and national networks, as well as industrial areas with supply chain hubs. There is a self-evident need to continue efforts to restructure and restructure the railway so that the country can finally have a reliable, safe network. Finally, we expect that interventions to strengthen the resilience of public infrastructure and adaptation to climate crisis conditions will continue and be expanded.

Adequate and quality infrastructure, as well as a modern, functional transport sector, are prerequisites for an extroverted, competitive economy. We can achieve this goal with a comprehensive national strategy and a strong will to reform. The Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry will continue to constructively participate in the relevant dialogue, cooperate and support any positive reform in the direction of good administration, transparency and efficiency.
