Efforts to Uncover Circumstances of Killing of Egyptian Citizen in Switzerland

The Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the continuation of its efforts, in cooperation with the Swiss investigation authorities, in order to uncover the circumstances of the killing of an Egyptian citizen whose body was found dumped in the Rhine River.

The ministry said in a statement that it was following “with the Swiss authorities closely, from the first moments, the case of the disappearance of Egyptian citizen Maryam Magdy Ahmed Al-Tufaili, whose body was found on February 10, dumped in the Rhine River, near one of the municipalities of the Swiss canton of Zurich.”

The Egyptian embassy had received a report of the citizen’s disappearance on January 31, from her residence in a Swiss hotel, and then contacted the security services, which in turn began a search operation in several cities before her body was found.

The Foreign Ministry statement indicated that the Swiss authorities arrested “one of the suspected persons,” while the victim’s brother said, speaking to Egyptian media, that “the suspect is her husband, who holds Swiss citizenship.”

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry confirmed that “follow-up will continue with the Swiss investigation authorities until the circumstances of the case and the identity of the perpetrator are revealed.”

For his part, the victim’s brother, Ahmed Magdy, speaking to local television channels, accused her husband of “killing her because he was the only beneficiary,” and said that he “planned and carried out his crime in cold blood and calm.”

Magdy pointed out that his sister’s husband “traveled with their daughters, Khadija (6 years old) and Fatima (8 years old), without his wife’s knowledge, after major problems between them in Egypt, during the past year,” adding: “He ran away with the girls in March 2023, and the relationship between them broke off for 7 months.” Before Maryam contacted NGOs, organizations, and government agencies, they actually helped her travel and see her two daughters.”

He pointed out that the court decided to allow her to see her two daughters three days a week, spending a full day with them, and this situation continued from mid-October until the end of December.

He declared his conversion to Islam and then visited Egypt to meet his relatives,” adding that they got married and “last year there were problems between them over the niqab because she decided to take it off contrary to what he wanted. He indicated that he is awaiting the progress of investigations into the case to know the next steps, and that he is following up on those efforts with a lawyer in Switzerland.

For its part, it was issued Swiss police On February 10, she announced that the victim’s body had been found, and said that “the exact circumstances of the woman’s death are under investigation,” adding that “in this context, a 32-year-old suspect was arrested on the evening of Friday, February 9.”

Regarding the day of his sister’s disappearance, Magdy said: “On January 31, she was visiting the girls in the apartment, and I spoke to her at 7:30 pm Swiss time, and the next day, 8 hours had passed, and she did not turn on the Internet, and she is naturally active on social media, then she called.” “And the phone was off. I did not feel much anxiety until the absence continued, and we communicated with the family, the hotel, the police, and the Egyptian embassy.”

He added that they filed a disappearance report, and for 10 days the police did not find Maryam, but on February 10, they found her body dumped in the Rhine River.

It is noteworthy that there have been no reports or responses yet from the victim’s husband to her brother’s accusations against him, and the Swiss police statement did not mention whether the husband was the suspect in custody.
