The King of Morocco calls on the allies of Rabat to clarify their position on the issue of Western Sahara
The King of Morocco, Mohammed VI, called on some countries allied to his country to clarify their position on the disputed issue of Western Sahara between Rabat and the Polisario Front.
In a speech yesterday, the Moroccan monarch said, “We expect some countries, from Morocco’s traditional and new partners, that adopt unclear positions regarding the Moroccanness of the Sahara, to clarify their positions and review their content in an unequivocal way.”
While the King of Morocco did not specify which countries he was talking regarding, he praised Washington’s position, which recognized Rabat’s sovereignty over the disputed region, within the framework of a tripartite agreement that also stipulated Morocco’s normalization of its diplomatic relations with Israel.
Morocco, which controls regarding 80 percent of the disputed territory, proposes giving it autonomy under its sovereignty as the only solution to the decades-old conflict. Meanwhile, the Polisario Front, backed by neighboring Algeria, is demanding the region’s independence.
