This new tool is valuable since the waiting lists for exams of this type in our province are very substantial.
As a reminder, a breast assessment is a complete examination capable of diagnosing a breast problem. Most often, this involves a mammogram possibly combined with an ultrasound. A much more in-depth examination than the simple mammotest, this free test offered to women aged 50 and over. “By offering this new service, our desire is to relieve congestion in hospitals for such examinationsexplains Florence Coppin, gynecologist at the Libramont Women’s Medical Center. The opportunity to develop such a center on our premises presented itself and given the lack in the province of Luxembourg, we did not hesitate for a single moment.”
Doctor Coppin estimates that between 250 and 300 monthly examinations might take place from February.
“Our machines will be of the latest generationshe specifies. If an anomaly is detected, we will contact the prescribing doctor directly. The patient is then free to be followed wherever he wants. We have connections with hospitals in the region but also in hospital structures outside the province.”
More than a year of waiting in Arlon
The shortage of breast specialists in the province of Luxembourg is unfortunately not new. These doctors, specialized in the study and treatment of breast diseases, are becoming increasingly rare in the hospitals of the Vivalia intercommunal health care company.
The help provided by private centers like that of the Women’s Medical Center is therefore not negligible. “In the north of the province, in the hospitals of Marche-en-Famenne and Vielsam, the waiting times for such tests are reasonable, explains Doctor Hebert, general director of medical affairs at Vivalia. You have to wait between one and two months. In Libramont, we are close to a twelve-month wait. The situation is most critical in the south since waiting times go beyond a year for Arlon.”
It must be said that human resources are sorely lacking. “There is a shortage of medical imaging technologists but also of radiologists, continues Doctor Hebert. Some of these professionals will help in structures other than hospitals but this does not necessarily solve the problem since they weaken them.
Doctor Hebert reminds us that it is essential that a patient is taken care of from A to Z in the same hospital structure. Oncologists, surgeons and even psychologists can thus work together. Note that the Libramont site will soon be equipped with “new generation” machines for exams.
