Efficient Baggage Check-in Machines at Frankfurt Airport: Reducing Waiting Times for Passengers

2023-06-18 07:00:00

After the summer of chaos in 2022, the airports are trying to do everything better this year – Frankfurt Airport has put new baggage check-in machines into operation for this purpose.

Long queues in front of check-in and security control – we all still have the pictures from last year in our heads and this year there were one or two chaos days once more. Airports are now trying to be more efficient with technical solutions in order to reduce waiting times. While there are now bookable security slots at many German airports, more and more self-service baggage check-in machines are being put into operation. Since June 16, there have been 21 new, modern counters in Frankfurt like one press release emerges.

Initially only for passengers of the Lufthansa Group airlines

They promise to halve the time it takes to check in luggage at the airport: the new self-check-in machines at Frankfurt Airport. They were put into operation on Friday and should help the airport to better cope with the summer travel wave. According to information from Frankfurt Airport, passengers can be checked in at the new, high-tech machines twice as fast as with the conventional process – which of course is still possible.

Passengers now have the choice of handing in their luggage in the traditional way at the counter or at one of the new machines. If more human interaction is required, this is possible even with the new switches. Because the devices have a hybrid functionality. In addition to the classic self-service function, mobile counters can be easily connected so that the process can be carried out by an employee if necessary.

The 21 new machines are located in Terminal 1, Departure Halls A and B at Frankfurt Airport and are initially only intended for Lufthansa Group passengers. However, there should be more in the future in addition to the new and existing machines. Fraport board member Pierre Dominique Prümm wants every passenger to be able to check in their luggage themselves at any time of the day or night. But this is not for free. In order to realize this plan, an investment of around 20 million euros is required.

Conclusion on the new baggage counters at Frankfurt Airport

No more long waiting times at baggage check-in? For Lufthansa Group passengers traveling from Frankfurt Airport, the new baggage kiosks are definitely an improvement. Practice shows how much time can ultimately be saved. I like using Bagdrop machines very much, but I also often notice that the application is not always very intuitive in practice, especially for first-time users, and that the support of the staff is often required.
