Efficiency and Savings: The Power of Programmable Thermostats for Energy Reduction in France

2023-10-14 05:01:00

the essentials The government intends to continue the national effort to reduce energy consumption in France. A new sobriety plan has just been unveiled, it focuses in particular on programmable thermostats for heating the French.

Last year, the order was passed, no more than 19°C indoors during the winter. Yes, but how can we ensure that such instructions are respected? This is where programmable thermostats installed on radiators come into play. An intelligent module that allows you to save energy (and save on gas or electricity bills), which the government wants to generalize in 2024.

Agnès Pannier-Runacher, the Minister of Energy Transition, revealed, this Thursday, October 12, the outlines of a new sobriety plan which intends to make it a habit, to make it long-term: “My objective is that this decline becomes structural at the end of 2024, and that we go further,” she said in an interview. For example, the French consumed on average 12% less in 2022 than in 2021.

As part of the plan #sobriety, we support up to 80% the purchase and installation of programmable thermostats until next year regardless of income. It’s simple, concrete and effective! #Les4V pic.twitter.com/6XEBa12aWr

And this therefore involves support in the acquisition and installation of radiator programming thermostats. Concretely, a heating instruction is given, programs can be pre-established in advance, depending on the model. The objective is to heat intelligently, perhaps by heating the living rooms more during the day, and by lowering or even cutting off the heating in the event of absence, even for a short period of time.

A saving of almost 15% on the gas or electricity bill

Thermostats would allow 15% energy savings according to the government, but the purchase of such a programmer has a cost, “between €650 and €1000 per unit”, according to Agnès Pannier-Runacher, who concedes that This is an “investment”.

To overcome this financial obstacle, the government is announcing state aid which could go up to 80% of the price depending on the thermostats, without income conditions. Aid may be granted to the French throughout 2024, the payment terms will be communicated, but the aid should be covered by the system of CEE (energy saving certificates) which reward energy gains.

The Minister of Energy Transition also invites distributors to offer “turnkey solutions” and energy suppliers to send information campaigns on thermostats by e-mail to make individuals aware of the benefits of these equipment.
