As of Monday, the minimum wage will increase from $14.25 to $15.25. Even if it is an increase considered relevant for some, the fact remains that for others, it is not enough, claiming at least $18/h. Could this increase have effects on inflation?
“It’s an interesting increase, but we’ve fallen so far behind on the minimum wage that we have to catch up and go faster,” believes Denis Bolduc, general secretary of the FTQ.
“I find it difficult to buy the argument, whether young people or students, that they should be paid less. In recent years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of people who work 40 hours a week and to be able to eat enough to eat, they have to turn to food banks. For us, it becomes a basic criterion, if you work full time, normally you should be able, ”he adds.
Can raising the minimum wage have a snowball effect?
“There is this argument that has been put forward, there have been significant increases in the minimum wage in the past in Ontario, British Columbia and California, and that has not created an inflationary effect. The inflationary episode that we have experienced is not related to the increase in the minimum wage. Raising the salary is not a significant element on inflation, ”defends Mr. Bolduc.
For the secretary general of the FTQ, this increase in the minimum wage is not enough.
“We had met the Minister of Labour, Mr. Boulet, not long following the announcement. Yes, there is an increase (…), but it is already advised that we are going to revisit our offer since it is not enough, ”he argues.
