In the “Sustainable Health” program, we hosted Dr. Maya Maznar, a pediatric specialist at Dr. Sulaiman Al Habib Medical Center in Dubai, to present the following file: Lack of sleep in children, what health problems does it lead to?

Recent medical studies indicate the negative impact of lack of sleep on children’s brains

A recent medical study indicated the effect of lack of sleep on the development of children, especially in the elementary stage.

The study revealed that children who sleep less than 9 hours a day at this stage have changes in the areas of the brain responsible for memory, intelligence, and well-being compared to children who sleep nine to twelve hours every night.

The study, conducted at the University of Maryland, stated that these differences in the brain are linked to mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and impulsive behaviors.

In the study, which was published in The Lancet, researchers examined data collected from eight thousand three hundred children between the ages of 9 and 10 who were enrolled in a program to study the cognitive development of adolescent brains.

The children in the study underwent magnetic resonance imaging of the brain, and their medical records reported by their parents between the ages of two and 12 years were reviewed. The images showed disturbing results, as it revealed for the first time the potential long-term impact of lack of sleep on neurocognitive development in children.

In the same context, a new New Zealand study revealed that a decrease in sleep duration by 39 minutes on average over a week in children between the ages of eight and ten would lead to poor health, which could affect school achievement and the child’s quality of life in general.

The researchers confirmed that half an hour of sleep is not an easy and insignificant period of time as many might think, according to the results published on the “jamanetwork” platform.

This study also shows the importance of parents making sure that their young children go to sleep at a specific time, and not being lenient with them and letting them entertain themselves with phones or watching television.
