MEXICO CITY (El Universal).— At least five states, Veracruz, Chiapas, San Luis Potosí, Hidalgo and Morelos, reported damage as a result of the rains left in the wake of tropical storm “Chris.”
In Veracruz, the state Civil Protection Secretariat reported that five temporary shelters were activated, where 62 people were sheltered. In addition, in the state, nearly 2,000 homes were counted with some type of damage, landslides on state highways and overflowing rivers.
At the time of going to press, no deaths had been reported.
In the municipality of Huiloapan, floods with water, mud and trees were reported, flooding streets and homes, affecting 600 families. Residents and members of different corporations cleaned houses and roads, as well as reestablishing water, telephone, electricity and drainage services due to the landslide on El Gentil hill.
In Tlilapan there was also an avalanche of water and mud that damaged 200 homes and main roads in at least two neighborhoods.
Due to the overflow of the Chiltepec stream in the municipality of Isla, in the south of the state, 765 families were affected by rains.
In Xalapa, the state capital, there were floods, landslides and fallen trees in different areas.
The state government activated temporary shelters in Ursulo Galvan (Real del Oro), Alamo (Pueblo Nuevo ejido), Banderilla, Martinez de la Torre and San Rafael.
In this regard, Conagua reported that the Actopan River, La Antigua River, Bobos River and Misantla River registered significant increases and overflows.
In Chiapas, “Chris” caused damage in four municipalities in the Sierra, Norte and Costa regions, where it damaged 28 houses, forcing 645 people to be evacuated, while in the municipality of Comitán, a motorcyclist who managed to survive was swept away by a stream while crossing a bridge.
Civil Protection also confirmed that the Tacuba River and the San Pedro Yocnavil stream in the municipality of Chilón overflowed.
In Frontera Comalapa, the winds caused several homes to be unroofed in the Paso Hondo and Santa Rita communities.
In Huehuetán, in the Costa region, humanitarian aid, food and blankets were provided to some 60 families from the Cantón San Luis community and 40 more from the Las Palmas community.
In San Luis Potosí, several rivers in the Huasteca region and other regions experienced flooding.
The City Council of Ciudad Valles warned regarding the rising waters of the river that runs through the city, which reached a depth of 3.9 meters. Due to this condition, the passage over the bridge that leads to the Juárez neighborhood was suspended, and with the support of municipal Civil Protection, the inhabitants of this area known as La Bajadita evacuated their homes.
Likewise, in the municipalities of Tampacán and Axtla de Terrazas, flood warnings were issued in the area.
In Hidalgo, there was a sinkhole of more than 5 meters on the Santa María-Acapa road in the municipality of Tlahuiltepa, landslides and the suspension of classes in some schools in Tulancingo.
In addition, landslides were reported on the road to Tepehuacán, while in San Agustín Mezquititlán several towns remain cut off due to rising rivers.
In Morelos, Civil Protection recorded an increase in the level of the Tembembe River, which is why the municipalities of Miacatlán and Puente de Ixtla issued an alert to the population, in addition to reporting flooding, fallen trees and perimeter walls in Cuernavaca, Jiutepec, Tlaltizapán and Miacatlán.
