According to Professor Lee Dong-won’s thesis, head and neck malignant tumors are the 7th most common tumors worldwide and account for 3% of all malignant tumors in Korea. Most cases are squamous cell carcinoma, and the causative factors are divided into environmental and host factors. Environmental factors include drinking, smoking, nutritional deficiencies, exposure to ultraviolet rays and radiation, occupational exposure to dust or heavy metals, and viral infections.
In particular, drinking is closely related to the development of malignant tumors in the upper respiratory tract and upper digestive tract. However, the occurrence of cancer is not proportional to the amount of alcohol consumed, and is influenced by individual genetic differences and genetic susceptibility. The metabolic ability of enzymes involved in alcohol metabolism varies depending on genetic polymorphisms, which influences the development of alcohol-related diseases.
Professor Lee Dong-won said, “In this study, we investigated the distribution of ADH7 single nucleotide polymorphisms in Korean head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients and normal controls to determine whether ADH7 single nucleotide polymorphisms are associated with the development of Korean head and neck squamous cell carcinoma.” explained.
He continued, “As a result of this study, it is believed that the ADH7 gene polymorphism is associated with the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in Koreans and can be used as a molecular biological marker to select high-risk groups for the development of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma in Koreans.”
