In the review paper 20 randomized, controlled studies with a total of 1878 subjects who ate a vegetarian diet for 2 to 24 months were analyzed. In four studies, the subjects had cardiovascular disease, in seven interventions the participants had diabetes and in nine studies the subjects had at least two cardiovascular risk factors, such as obesity, high blood pressure or diabetes. The participants were mostly in a pharmacological therapy, which was also continued during the study.
The analysis was able to show that compared to other diets (standard diet, diet for diabetes or similar), the vegetarian diet significantly reduced the level of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-cholesterol) following an average of six months (by an average of 6.6 mg/dl), as well as the long-term blood glucose level HbA1c (by 0.24% on average) and body weight (by 3.4 kg on average). According to the review article, blood pressure was the only parameter examined that was not significantly reduced (by -0.1 mm Hg on average).
