Effective Weight Loss Strategies: Comparing Calorie Restriction and Intermittent Fasting

Obesity is one of the major health problems due to its attendant comorbidities. Many traditional weight loss diets involve counting calories to control calorie intake, which can be tedious and difficult to observe over the long term.

Intermittent fasting has gradually become an alternative better and better documented by studies and more and more widely practiced by people who wish to lose weight. This new study confirms its effectiveness, in one form in particular, food limited to a reduced range of the day, in inducing significant weight loss and maintaining it over the longer term.

Rather classic calorie restriction or intermittent fasting?

The study, conducted with 90 participants suffering from obesity therefore compared the 2 diets, classic calorie restriction or intermittent fasting, in terms of effectiveness, for weight control and reduction of cardiometabolic risk. The participants were divided to follow:

time-restricted eating over an 8 hour range (12pm-8pm) without calorie counting, 25% calorie restriction, no change in calorie intake and meal times.

The analysis confirms that

participants who engaged in this intermittent fasting, in practice, consume 425 calories less per day than the control group; lose regarding 5 pounds more than the control group following one year; participants on the calorie restriction option consume 405 fewer calories per day, lose regarding 6 pounds more than the control group following one year; These interventions, intermittent fasting and caloric restriction enjoy a compable and rather high adherence on the part of the participants.

Always under the control of a health professional: the researchers point out that these results were undoubtedly made possible by the follow-up of the participants by nutritionists-dieticians who helped them to make healthier food choices.

These results therefore encourage a better consideration of individual preferences, rather than simply setting a standard weight loss regimen. The study also highlights substantial individual variability in weight loss via these interventions.

Further research is therefore still needed to identify the criteria to consider when choosing a weight loss diet.
