Effective Treatment Options for Urinary Incontinence in Women

[메디컬투데이=김준수 기자] As we age, our muscles shrink and become weaker. In particular, for women, the pelvic and vaginal muscles relax for various reasons such as pregnancy, childbirth, and aging, often causing urinary incontinence.

It is a common disease, with 35-40% of adult women having symptoms of urinary incontinence. Because urine leaks regardless of one’s will, it can cause personal hygiene issues and inconveniences in daily life such as exercising and going out. Discomfort in daily life can diminish interpersonal relationships and have a negative impact on mental health, so treatment is necessary.

Stress urinary incontinence, which accounts for 80% of all urinary incontinence patients, causes urine leakage in situations where abdominal pressure increases, such as coughing, sneezing, or exercising. In women, the pelvic muscles become weak and relaxed due to repeated pregnancy and childbirth, a decrease in female hormones following menopause, and aging, which causes the bladder and urethra to become unsupported and sag downward.

These symptoms require treatment because they cause fear of smells or mistakes, which interferes with interpersonal relationships and limits the scope of activity. In this case, it can be treated through TOT surgery. It is a stable and effective method of fixing the urethra in the appropriate position using mesh tape that is harmless to the human body.

Park Yeon-i, director of Gangdong Miz Women’s Hospital in Seoul, said, “In the past, we recommended exercising the sphincter muscles around the pelvic muscles as a treatment for urinary incontinence. Although these methods can be of some help in prevention and improvement, it is difficult to completely cure urinary incontinence symptoms with simple exercises alone. Additionally, urinary incontinence symptoms often seem to improve but then recur. If medication or pelvic muscle exercises (Kegel exercises) do not help, urinary incontinence surgery may be effective. “It is relatively simple and has a very high success rate, so it is a highly recommended surgery for most women with stress urinary incontinence.”

He continued, “Many women consider urinary incontinence symptoms to be an unspeakable problem and often hide or neglect them. Urinary incontinence is a very common symptom and a disease that can be fully recovered with appropriate treatment, so active treatment is important,” he advised.
