Effective Tiger Mosquito Control: Water Deprivation and Community Involvement

2023-07-27 19:13:41

Like you, we can only observe an increase in the number of mosquitoes on our territory in recent years. This increase in nuisance is explained by the rapid colonization of the department by the tiger mosquito. This mosquito is particularly aggressive during the day, with a peak of aggression at the start and end of the day. Thus, while we were “used” to seeing mosquitoes in the evening, the introduction of this species on our territory widened the nuisance range to the whole of the day. In addition, the tiger mosquito is an urban area mosquito and develops almost exclusively in places of human origin (flower pots, bins, toys, gutters, outdoor furniture, etc.), hence its close proximity to the environment. male. Thus, a tiger mosquito that bites in the garden is born less than 150 meters away, so it moves very little.

The most effective way to control this mosquito is to deprive it of water. The places of development of the tiger mosquito are close to homes, the involvement of each inhabitant is essential. By emptying, covering, storing any container allowing its development, its proliferation is limited.

It should be noted that the precise census of all the development sites of this mosquito is impossible. Insecticide treatments do not eliminate mosquitoes in the long term, not to mention the risks for biodiversity and human health. These treatments are implemented only by the health authorities (Regional Health Agency, Prefect) when the tiger mosquito is a potential vector of infectious diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya or Zika and thus becomes responsible for a health risk. The use of these treatments is restricted to avoid any creation of resistance (the molecules might no longer be active in the event of epidemics) and to limit the exposure of the local population to these insecticides through repeated treatments.

For more than 15 years the Commune has participated in the financing of the Rhône-Alpes Interdepartmental Agreement on Mosquito Control (EIRAD) and thus treats its natural areas. Following the appearance of the tiger mosquito, this organization initiated a progressive awareness campaign for all the inhabitants of Salaise over 3 years. We can only regret that these door-to-door awareness-raising actions had very little success, indeed, 6% of the homes visited opened their doors to EIRAD agents, once morest a regional average of 20%.

In addition, indirect actions are implemented by the City to encourage natural predators such as bats, via the reduction of public lighting and the installation of nesting boxes, or raising awareness via the Environment Day or Salaise Info.

If necessary, the Municipality can organize a visit with EIRAD to your neighborhood, if you yourself and several of your neighbors wish to carry out a diagnosis in one of the properties. To do this, please let the town hall secretariat know you (by phone at 04.74.29.00.80 / by email: secretariat@mairie-salaise-sur-sanne.fr), specifying your request, your district and the number of interested people.
