Plant these 6 varieties in your garden to attract dragonflies, which will drive mosquitoes away from your home!
- Sugar
- Baker’s yeast
- lukewarm water
In the trap, there are mainly two elements that attract mosquitoes: carbon dioxide (CO2) and the odors emanating from the fermentation of sugar by yeast. These elements work as follows:
1. Carbon Dioxide (CO2): When yeast ferments sugar in the mixture of warm water and sugar, it produces CO₂. Mosquitoes are strongly attracted to CO₂, as they perceive it as a indicator of the presence of a blood sourceessential for their nutrition.
2. Fermentation odors: Besides CO₂, yeast fermentation of sugar produces other odorous substances that attract mosquitoes. These odors can be perceived by mosquitoes from a distance and encourage them to approach the trap.
By combining these two elements, the trap manages to attract mosquitoes to it. When they fly near the trap, they enter through the funnel of the bottle. Once inside, they struggle to find the exit and end up drowning in the mixture of water, sugar and yeast.

Your homemade trap
You probably already have everything you need at home. Bring:
- An empty, transparent plastic bottle
- 50 g of sugar (prefer brown sugar for better durability)
- 25 cl of lukewarm water
- 1 g baker’s yeast
- A knife or scissors
- Scotch tape
That’s it, all you have to do is set the trap.
Take the plastic bottle and remove the label. Make sure the bottle is clean. Cut off the top of the bottle (regarding a third) to create a funnel. Turn this part upside down and insert it into the bottom part of the bottle to form an inverted funnel.
Mix the sugar in the lukewarm water until it is completely dissolved. Pour the mixture of sugar and water into the lower part of the container.

Installation and Warning
Last step: installing the mosquito trap.
The ideal places to install the trap
It is now necessary to choose the best locations:
- Garden: place the trap in your garden, near areas where you rest or spend time outdoors.
- Near water points: Mosquitoes tend to breed near standing water points. By placing the trap near these areas, you can attract mosquitoes before they reach the areas where you are.
- Distance from assembly areas: set the trap away from areas where people congregate, such as picnic areas or children’s play areas.
- Veranda or covered terrace: if you have one, place the trap nearby. Mosquitoes are often attracted to these sheltered spaces where they can hide and breed.
By choosing locations wisely, you maximize trap efficiency by attracting mosquitoes away from areas where you spend time. Remember to regularly check the trap and clean it to maintain its effectiveness.

Places to avoid
It is important to avoid certain places:
- Congregation areas: This might increase the risk of attracting mosquitoes to crowded areas.
- Entrances to the house: you risk attracting mosquitoes inside rather than pushing them away.
- Bedrooms: This would attract mosquitoes near where you sleep, which will disturb your sleep.
- Areas of stagnant water: this may further encourage mosquito breeding rather than trapping them.
By avoiding these places, you reduce the risk of attracting mosquitoes to unwanted areas and maximize trap effectiveness where it matters most. Not the material to make this trap? Here are other tips to repel them effectively and avoid stings
