Despite its sci-fi film feel, it has almost gone unnoticed. A mosquito control operation was carried out during the night from Friday to Saturday September 9, in a few streets of the Aérospatiale district, in Châtillon (Hauts-de-Seine). An operation requested by the city and decided by the regional health agency (ARS) following the reporting, in the sector, of two cases of dengue fever in two residents returning from the Antilles.
Carried out between 11:30 p.m. and 2:30 a.m., the operation aimed to eradicate the Aedes albopictus mosquito, otherwise known as the “tiger mosquito”. An insect increasingly widespread in Île-de-France known to be a vector of viruses such as chikungunya, Zika or dengue.
A zone of 150 m around the home of patients treated
Among the axes concerned: part of Avenue de la Paix, Rue Voltaire, Rue Béranger and Boulevard Félix-Faure, i.e. an area of 150 m around the patients’ homes. “This mosquito control took place in a very specific area,” we explain to the city of Châtillon. The streets concerned were closed to traffic during the intervention. »
This is confirmed by José, a resident of the neighborhood who thought he would see men in overalls arriving, their faces protected by glasses and gas masks. “Like on TV,” he laughs. “But the truth is that I didn’t see any of that,” he continues with almost a touch of regret. All there was to see was a car, some kind of big pick-up truck, moving at a walking pace. And from the rear platform, technicians were throwing a sort of insecticide product towards the homes with a sort of cannon…”
A scene which completely escaped the vigilance of a resident of Avenue de la Paix, included in the mosquito control perimeter. “I had to sleep,” she slips. But it’s good to have done it. »
“We have the feeling that there are more of them every year”
Not really because there is a fear of viruses. Dengue fever, the mother does not really fear catching it. No, if she welcomes the operation, it is above all because the young mother can no longer bear to endure, every night, mosquito raids and the itching that goes with them. “The ankles, the arms, everything goes,” she growls. We get devoured. And every night. We really have the feeling that there are more of them every year. It’s simple, I feel like I’ve never seen so many. »
VIDEO. Victims of an invasion of mosquitoes, the inhabitants of Antony no longer dare to go out
At the beginning of September, two other mosquito control operations also targeting the tiger mosquito have already been carried out in Colombes and in the 18th arrondissement of Paris. Here once more, as is the procedure, the two operations were organized by the ARS following reports of cases of dengue fever in people who had traveled outside mainland France.
