Ivory Coast health authorities on Saturday launched a mosquito control campaign in Abidjan, Ivory Coast’s economic capital, following a dengue epidemic, the Ivorian health ministry said.

This activity, which will last until May 5, “will make it possible to reduce the spread of diseases transmitted by mosquitoes and especially dengue fever, in the municipalities of southern Abidjan which are Marcory, Koumassi, Port-Bouet and Treichville”, he said the chief of staff to the Ivorian Minister of Health, Charles Koffi.

The campaign consists of informing and raising awareness among populations regarding the recognition and elimination of breeding grounds for mosquitoes that carry the disease.

“These breeding grounds are very often used tires, abandoned crates, stagnant water, banana trees and others, which are breeding grounds for mosquitoes because of the water they retain,” Mr. Koffi noted.

He specified that the effectiveness of this operational plan would be enhanced by treating breeding sites that are difficult to eliminate by the populations, by an insecticide treatment, but also by gassing and spraying by drone.

In Côte d’Ivoire, the dengue epidemic caused 27 deaths out of 321 confirmed cases in 2023. According to the Ministry of Health, the epidemic occurred in Abidjan last June, particularly in the health district of Cocody-Bingerville, before spreading throughout the autonomous district of Abidjan.

Dengue fever is transmitted by the tiger mosquito and has symptoms similar to malaria, including fever, headache, severe fatigue, muscle pain, lack of appetite and joint pain.
