Effective Action Plan: Solving Pollution Problems in Neufchâteau’s Lake

It was our colleagues from TVlux who gave the information on their site on Monday. According to them, “For years a collector supposed to recover only rainwater was also connected to the waste water of the Adeps sports complex, and poured the delicate mixture into the lake a few hundred meters downstream”.

Contacted by us, the mayor of Neufchâteau, François Huberty, is of course delighted with this discovery which surprised more than one, but which demonstrates the effectiveness, he says, of an action plan in place six months ago: “Idélux and SPGE solved the problem of the Adeps collector very quicklyhe explains. Everyone was unaware of the existence of this polluting collector. This does not mean that the waters of the lake are now healthy. We have just solved one problem, there are others and therefore other sources of pollution”he warns.

We analyze the river bit by bit and as soon as a source of pollution is detected, we treat it

The mayeur wants to believe that one day we will be able to solve all the problems via, he says, very time-consuming investigative work as part of an action plan that has been underway since the beginning of the year: “You have to see how we practice, adds the mayor. For example, we scan the river bit by bit and analyze the water. If we identify pollution, we look for the cause and remedy it. It’s painstaking work, but in the end we’ll manage to stop all the causes of pollution coming from the river. Already it’s a good thing that the cattle can no longer have access to the streams thanks to the fences which are compulsory”, he rejoices.

Samples are taken weekly from the lake by the SPW

Still according to François Huberty, other causes of pollution are scrutinized: the drainage systems of course, the storm overflow, runoff water following a heavy downpour or a storm: “We know that in these two cases, the pollution rises for 24 to 48 hours and the quality of the bathing water is less good. The municipal and SPW budgets that have been released make it possible to investigate further to identify the reasons for this contamination. In the meantime, the SPW takes samples every week from the lake to analyze the quality of the bathing water. It is good. The fact remains that research work is continuing upstream , until we have solved all the problems”punctuated by M. Huberty.
