Accordingly, the risk of premature death increases with every year of illness. “The incidence of type 2 diabetes is increasing worldwide. This trend is primarily driven by lifestyle and factors related to obesity, diet and lack of physical activity,” the authors wrote in “The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology” . The fact that type 2 diabetes occurs in adolescents and young adults is relatively new. Previously, it was estimated that diabetes reduces life expectancy by an average of six years. The influence of time of diagnosis was unknown. The British scientists therefore analyzed the data from 1.5 million affected people.
Data from the USA and Europe
Result: Using US figures, a 50-year-old who was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 30 dies 14 years earlier than someone who does not have diabetes. If a diagnosis is made at the age of 40, the person affected dies ten years earlier; if the disease begins at the age of 50, life expectancy is reduced by six years. If you use the data from the EU, the estimate results in an average of 13, nine or five fewer expected years of life – these data refer to the diagnosis at 30, 40 or 50 years.
