E-cigarettes have been shown to reduce sperm count and reduce testicular size, which can interfere with libido. [사진= 게티이미지뱅크]Among the member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Korea has the third highest rate of e-cigarette use. If the adult e-cigarette use rate in OECD countries is divided by gender, males in Korea have the highest e-cigarette use rate at 10%. In recent years, e-cigarettes have spread to young people.

However, according to a study published in the Spanish medical journal Revista Internacional de Andrología (Revista Internacional de Andrología), e-cigarettes can reduce sperm count and reduce the size of the testicles, which can interfere with libido.

Researchers at Sivas Cumhuriyet University in Turkey divided rats into three groups and placed them under a specially designed bell bottle. One group was exposed to regular cigarette smoke and the other group was exposed to e-cigarette vapor for an hour each. I was told to take it twice a day. The other group was not given any acting. Afterwards, the research team tested the level of cotinine, a by-product of nicotine metabolism, in the urine of the rats, and measured the number of sperm, testicular size, and germline index (GSI).

The study found that the sperm count of the rats that did not inhale any smoke was 98.5 million sperm per milliliter, but the rats that ingested the vapor had 95.1 million sperm per milliliter. Rats exposed to cigarette smoke had the lowest sperm count at 89 million per milliliter.

In addition, the rats exposed to cigarette smoke had smaller, lighter testicles and fewer swimmable sperm than those exposed to e-cigarette vapor or those who did not receive any smoke. Microscopic examination of the structure of the testicles revealed structural changes in 5 out of 8 rats exposed to e-cigarette vapor.

The researchers said, “E-cigarette smoke has been introduced as harmless in previous smoking cessation studies, but it should be noted that it can cause morphological changes in the testicles.”
