Educators walking from Zarasai to Vilnius: we are still coming to an agreement

More people will join

Andrius Navickas, the chairman of the trade union of Lithuanian education workers, who is going from Zarasai to Vilnius with his colleagues, said that they will spend the night in Antalieptė from Saturday to Sunday, and last night they stayed in Baltriškės monastery.

According to A.Navicka, all the places to stay have been agreed in advance, and today the teachers on their way from Baltriškė to Antalieptė were caught in the rain.

“We started walking at 11, today it rained, we got wet. There are three of us going now, more people should be back on the route tomorrow. Someone will connect, someone will disconnect. We think that about ten people would go there all the time”, said A. Navickas.

There is a lot of symbolism in the walk

A. Navickas, when asked in what mood the local people meet the walkers, said that so far many people do not meet on the way: “We met a few in the village, but now we are going to where there are not many inhabited places. When we come to Utena tomorrow, there will be more people.”

On the first day, the education workers walked about 22 kilometers, on the second – about 15, but they still have longer sections ahead, some of them more than 30 kilometers: “Somehow, maybe the legs will hold.”

Daily kilometers, according to him, depend on the places of accommodation – as many kilometers are walked as there are between places of accommodation.

The striking teachers are expected to reach Utena tomorrow.

There is a lot of symbolism in the walk

A. Navickas mentioned that they carry small backpacks, drinking bottles, and some food with them.

The interviewer reminded why this form of strike was chosen – walking: “The prime minister’s adviser invited us to come, said that we will definitely come to an agreement – that’s what we are doing.

And those actions that are taking place are also like a road that continues since 2018.

A lot of symbolism (in walking), besides, walking is healthy, as well as being in the fresh air. And those actions that are taking place are also like a road that continues since 2018.

We are still going to an agreement and we are not reaching it. We believe that it is necessary to walk in reality and that those who walk will overcome that path.”

Standard phrases in the minister’s speech

With the strikers and long-term share with the Government starting teachers are available immediately continue negotiations on their demandsMinister of Education, Science and Sports Gintautas Jakštas said on Saturday.

“I am inviting now (…) the day before yesterday we sent proposals to the requirements you submitted and before that, of course, there were negotiations, now we have taken into account what we have heard, which is not suitable. We have sent the proposals, if you have already read them, you can continue negotiations today. (…)

As soon as you have assessed and are ready – say it right away and we will continue the conversation”, said the minister who met with the striking teachers near the Government House on Saturday.

The minister emphasizes the problems of individual teachers, but we do not see a desire to solve them systematically.

A. Navickas says that the minister’s speech lacked a systematic approach: “The minister emphasizes the problems of individual teachers, but we do not see the desire to solve them systematically.

Repeats pattern phrases: that there are no opportunities. Again, what are the options? Opportunities are desires and priorities, and then decisions. After all, solutions are possible.”

A. Navickas also added that there have been no solutions since 2018.
