EDT: Putu Uira Battery Testing Begins Monday

After a year of construction, the tests of Putu Uira, the giant battery of the Martin power station at Punaruu, will begin on Monday August 29 and last a month. But they might cause disruption, warns EDT.

Putu Uira is the virtual generator that will eventually replace a Punaruu generator to provide the spinning reserve guaranteeing the safety of Tahiti’s electricity network.

As a reminder, Putu Uira will:

  • Promote hydroelectricity at night (+4 GWh/year)
  • Promote daytime photovoltaics on weekends
  • Provide 15 MW of spinning reserve for 20 minutes 24 hours a day and therefore stop a Punaruu generator all year round

These numerous and complex tests will make it possible to qualify Putu Uira and, if necessary, to adjust a certain number of parameters.

Some of these tests may present risks for the continuity of service despite the many precautions taken upstream by the EDT teams.

EDT will therefore mobilize its teams to carry out the most complex tests at night, with the aim of minimizing the potential impact of customer load shedding in the event of failure.
