Edmundo González Urrutia formally requested political asylum in Spain (+Video)

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, José Manuel Albares, announced before the Foreign Commission of the Congress of Deputies that the Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González has formally requested political asylum this week in Spain, reported this Friday The Impulse.

Albares explained the conditions of the political asylum of the opposition presidential candidate, this Thursday, October 3, pointing out that the Government of Pedro Sánchez “welcomed Edmundo González as in the past it did with Leopoldo López and so many others for humanitarian reasons.”

In that sense, he assured that he verified in telephone conversations with the former Venezuelan ambassador “his free desire to come to Spain and request asylum”, for which he was protected in the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas and “a plane from the Force was sent Spanish Airline to guarantee safe arrival in Spain.”

The Spanish Foreign Minister criticized “the partisan and political use that some make of the dramatic situation that the Venezuelan people are experiencing.” Furthermore, Albares argued that Edmundo González’s decision to request asylum “has been his personal and free decision,” as he himself confirmed in a statement.

“The arrival of Edmundo González to Spain is a gesture of humanity and civil commitment of Spanish society and its Government. And thanks to that humanitarian gesture, Edmundo González is today free in Spain and not detained in Venezuela,” where there was an arrest warrant against him, he defended.

González arrived in Spain on September 8 on a Spanish Air Force plane chartered by the Spanish government after having expressed his desire to request asylum and having stayed several days at the residence of the Spanish ambassador in Caracas, after spending a month in that of the Dutch ambassador.
