Edmundo González promised to free the “political prisoners”

The presidential candidate of the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), Edmundo González Urrutia, promised this Friday that, if he is elected in the elections of July 28 and becomes the next president of Venezuela, he will free the “political prisoners” that – he said – exist in the nation.

In a meeting with the relatives of those detained for “political” reasons, González said that they decided “that one of the fundamental, priority tasks of the new government that will be established in Venezuela starting July 28 will be the freedom of political prisoners.”

On the social network X, González wrote that he felt “moved by the meeting with relatives of political prisoners. Listening to their stories increases our commitment. Here with the mother of Dignora Hernández, who, like 273 other Venezuelans, lives in an unjust prison. Together we will achieve her freedom.”

The message was accompanied by a video of the meeting, where he said: “Much encouragement, much spiritual strength, and let us work together so that, on July 28, the doors of democracy will open and will free their relatives.”

According to Foro Penal, which published a report on May 7, there are 273 “political prisoners” in the country, of which – it indicated – 252 are men and 21 women, in addition to 126 being civilians and 147 military personnel.
