Edmundo González met with deputies of the Spanish Congress

  • After his arrival in the European country where he requested asylum, the political leader received recognition from Congress as the “elected and legitimate president of Venezuela.”

Edmundo González held two meetings in the Spanish Congress with deputies and senators from the conservative regionalist parties Union of the Navarrese People (UPN) and Coalición Canaria (CC), on September 25.

At the meetings, the Spanish representatives conveyed their support and solidarity to González.

UPN deputy Alberto Catalán said that González has clear ideas about the post-electoral situation in Venezuela.

“I have seen him with great enthusiasm, great excitement and very clear ideas, he has conveyed the party’s commitment to the majority cry in favor of democracy and freedom in Venezuela,” said Catalán.

Before the meetings with representatives of UPN and CC, another meeting was scheduled with the president of the Vox party, Santiago Abascal, which had to be postponed at the request of the Spaniard due to ill health.

These meetings are part of the tour to gather support that the political leader is carrying out in Spain, a country where he has been since September 8 after requesting political asylum.

Other meetings of Edmundo González in Spain

The president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, received Edmundo Gonzalez at the Moncloa Palace on September 12.

At that meeting, Sánchez told Edmundo González that Spain will continue working in favour of democracy, dialogue and the fundamental rights of the people of Venezuela.

Later, the Venezuelan politician met with the president of the Spanish Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who assured him that he was fully committed “politically and morally” with the Venezuelan people.

Through his social media account X, Núñez Feijóo referred to Edmundo González as “the president-elect of Venezuela” when sharing some photographs posing with the political leader in the hemicycle of the Chamber of Deputies of Spain on September 17.

The same day, although hours later, González met with the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.

Diplomatic relations between Spain and Venezuela

Diplomatic relations between Spain and Venezuela are going through a moment of tension after Maduro summoned the Spanish ambassador in Caracas and called his representative in Madrid for consultations, after the Spanish Minister of Defense, Margarita Robles, described the Venezuelan government as a “dictatorship.”

In addition, the Maduro Executive announced on September 14 the arrest of two Spanish citizens for his alleged involvement in an alleged operation to carry out “terrorist” acts.

In view of this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain denied being involved in a “political destabilization operation” in Venezuela and has “flatly rejected any insinuation” in this regard.

Following the elections of 28 July, the Spanish government has not recognised the victory attributed to Nicolás Maduro and is calling on the authorities to publish the electoral records. However, it has not recognised the victory claimed by the opposition, as requested by Congress.
