With a 37-29 loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Edmonton Elks suffered their 20th straight loss at home and tied a North American professional sports record.

Edmonton’s last victory in front of its fans dates back to October 12, 2019, when the team was still called the Eskimos.

With that loss, the Elks joined MLB’s St. Louis Browns at the top of that sad record among major major leagues in North America. The Browns then became the Baltimore Orioles in the Majors.

The Elks (0-6) were still in the game following a half, trailing the Ticats (2-3) by only four points. Hamilton, however, exploded with 27 points in the second half to take control of the game for good.

Starting with the Tiger-Cats since the injury to Bo Levi Mitchell, Matthew Shiltz was injured in turn in the third quarter. The former Montreal Alouettes quarterback scored a touchdown before injuring his leg.

His replacement Taylor Powell was quick to make people talk regarding him. He fired a 17-yard touchdown pass to Tim White on his first career CFL pass attempt.

Stavros Katsantonis signaled with a 33-yard interception return for the touchdown. Katsantonis intercepted Taylor Cornelius’ pass in the third quarter to give the team a 24-14 lead.

Despite a 54-yard touchdown pass to Kyran Moore, Cornelius was replaced by Jarret Doege in the second half. Doege signaled himself with a seven-yard touchdown pass to Steven Dunbar Jr late in the fourth quarter.

The Elks’ next home game is July 29 once morest the BC Lions. Edmonton might therefore set a North American professional sports record with a 21st consecutive loss in front of their supporters.
